Orwell Would Have Loved This Convention

The writer of "1984," George Orwell, would have loved this just completed 2012 Republican Convention with its jingoistic pageantry, Buckingham Palace-style ceremony, prideful chest-beating patriotism, blustering, disrespectful ridicule and distortions of political opponents (complete with an allegedly talking magical chair), willful ignorance of science, particularly about global warming & climate change, wooden politicians, bellicose warmongering, "blame the poor" scapegoating, fetishism of guns, phony religionism (anyone who might have read from the Sermon on the Mount at this Convention would have been promptly escorted out by security guards), obeisance to unrestrained capitalism and its rich & powerful beneficiaries, syrupy romanticism about family, and even a featured pariah, namely Ron Paul (the lone bit of sanity about foreign policy there); albeit, not allowed to speak for all intents and purposes.  It was all at this Orwellian convention.  An inte…

The Romney Convention: "Blame Poor People"

The Romney/Republican Convention, just after its first full day, is shameless for their verbal attacks on poor people and welfare recipients, the overwhelming majority of which are families with children.  There is hardly a state in the union, if any, that still gives physically able-bodied single adults any "welfare" at all unless nutrition aid is counted as welfare.  If it was up to the Romney Convention, however, all welfare recipients and nutrition aid recipients would starve no matter if there are no jobs and that the nation is in a depression.  So much for "Do not hinder the little children," as Jesus said.  By the way, Ryan's Budget (that is Paul Ryan, Romney's vice-presidential choice) eliminates or makes draconian cuts to programs for the poor and elderly (Nutrition Aid, Medicaid and Medicare), while at the same time leaving the tax breaks for his Billionaire, Multimillionaire, and Millionaire friends in place, and even making further tax cuts for…

Flim Flam

At the risk of giving more publicity to the indefensible, the propaganda documentary "2016" reportedly had the best box office receipts at theaters last week, believe it or not.  This movie is obviously a rightist attempt to distort facts and influence the presidential election of 2012 in favor of Mr. Romney.  Where's Hollywood with a really good movie just when we need one to drown out the propaganda-of-the-hour?  [Even Hollywood can come up with a good movie every once in a blue moon.]  The fact that a sleazy, flim-flam artist, Dinesh D'Souza, is behind this so-called documentary is really all you need to know about the film.  This writer has practically made a career out of trying to make one racial group (U.S. blacks) look bad, and apparently -- though unfortunately -- that pays handsomely in America if you can fool enough people into thinking that you are an intellectual or historian.

Practically just on the basis of some of President Obama's worst detrac…
